What is the Alexander Technique?

The Alexander Technique is a taught life-long self-help method concerned with quality of movement. It can be practiced by anyone with an interest to pursue it.

Who can benefit?

Patients with chronic or recurrent non-specific lower back pain, neck and shoulder tension, breathing problems, stress-related illness and general fatigue where misuse of the body is a contributory factor.
  • Sports players and the health-conscious looking to improve co-ordination, performance and well-being.
  • Musicians and actors as an indispensable foundation to their professional skills.
  • Patients undergoing rehabilitation post injury, illness and surgery.
  • Women during pregnancy and child birth.
  • Anyone wanting to add a new dimension of awareness, well-being and creativity to their lives.

How will the technique help me?

The Technique works by helping you to identify and prevent the harmful postural habits that may be the cause of stress and pain. You will learn to release tension and rediscover balance of mind and body.

With an increased awareness you can:
  • Be poised, without stiffness
  • Move gracefully, with less effort
  • Be alert and focussed, with less strain
  • Breathe and speak more easily
  • Be calm and confident

In her teaching sessions, Sonia uses a combination of verbal explanation and gentle touch to help with balance and co-ordination.
